Chimpanzees' Tanabata Star Festival at Kumamoto Sanctuary

6th July, 2013

We held a Tanabata Star Festival for the chimpanzees at the Kumamoto Sanctuary.

It was a hot and humid day just before the end of the rainy season.
We replaced last year's bamboo in the chimpanzees' playground with fresh, new bamboo, so that the chimpanzees can climb on and play with the bamboo. Then, we decorated the bamboo with "Tanabata ornaments", made from fruit and vegetables.
Believing that "the wish written on the first piece of bread to be eaten by the chimpanzees will come true", we waited and watched for the chimpanzees to appear. The Chimpanzees were really excited to see the delicious food hanging from the bamboo. All of the chimpanzees enjoyed the food immensely. The bread on which the wishes had been written also diappeared into their mouthes. Whose wish will come true...?

Many thanks to all participants and the staff at Kumamoto Sanctuary!
